University Calendar of Events: 2018
My university, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, hosts visiting artists to come speak throughout the year. My task was to organize all of these events onto a double-sided poster, with one side functioning as a calendar and the other as a poster for display.
The calendar side of the poster could be used for the duration of the events, ending once the semester does. It provides details about who is speaking and what they are speaking about, as well as when the event takes place. Each block contains one month’s worth of events, with the number of the month clearly displayed on top in pink block letters.
The “image” side of the poster displayed photographs of the visiting artist’s work, giving viewers a quick overview of the type of work each artist makes. It is intended to function as a poster, lasting longer than the calendar side. This side of the poster can be hung on the user’s wall as decoration even after the events have ended.
Illustrated Typography
I decided to illustrate the largest text elements so that they matched the style of the illustrated boxes. Even though they were typographic elements, it was acting as an architectural element in the same way that the boxes were, so the poster looks more cohesive with these illustrated typographic elements
Typesetting
Each event for the calendar is typeset in Frutiger, with the day of the event given the highest priority in the hierarchy. The name of the artist and their talk are given the next level of importance, set in bold. Beneath that are the location details for each event, set in a medium weight, and the category that it belongs to, set in italics.
